Betty Jean Gordon Gaines, 87, of Moultrie, passed away Monday, November 6, 2017 at Colquitt Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm, Sunday, Nov 12, 2017 at Mount Olive Baptist Church with Rev. Andy Cashwell and Rev. Ronald Barrett officiating. Interment will follow at Baker/Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be the Colquitt Co. Sheriff's Department. Born June 2, 1930, in Moultrie, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Eddie Gordon and Eula Ashmore Gordon. Betty was the first female deputy sheriff in the state of Georgia, co-owner of Gaines IGA, co-owner of Gaines Riding, and co-owner of Gaines Farms. Betty had an unwavering faith of God. She was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church where she served many years as training union secretary and Sunday School teacher. She loved her family dearly and enjoyed getting everyone together. She was an excellent cook who enjoyed preparing meals for all her family and friends. She loved telling stories and jokes to everyone she met. She loved the outdoors where you would find her baiting a hook to fish, or reading a good book on her back porch. She enjoyed homemaking and loved pickling vegetables. She always strove to make home a beautiful place filled with great food and love. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Morris Lamar Gaines; great granddaughter, Gabriela Winn-Gaines; son in law, Ben Griffin; and sister, Daine Gordon Powell. Survivors include her son, Ronnie Gaines and wife Lisa of O'Brien, Florida; daughter, Jean Gaines Oliver and husband Randy of Norman Park; daughter in law, Dianne Stanfill Gaines; grandchildren, Ben Gaines (Mikela), Matt Gaines and wife Morgan, Jessica Gaines, Joe Ben Griffin and wife Ivy, and Laura Jean Oliver; great grandchildren, Rhett Gaines, Willow Winn-Gaines; and brother, E.W. Gordon and wife Martha of Cantonment, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held prior to the service on Sunday, November 12, 2017, at Mount Olive Baptist Church, from 2:00pm-3:00pm. Arrangements have been entrusted to Baker Funeral Home.
