Billie Joe Black, Sr.

Billie Joe Black, Sr., 82, of Hartsfield, died Thursday, September 5, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 9, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., in the chapel of Baker Funeral Home, with Reverend Hugh Ward and Reverend Arnold Buckner officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow at Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Doerun, Georgia. Paul Everett, Billie Black, Jr., Alex Everett, Ricky McWilliams, Eric Everett, and William Stewart will all serve as pallbearers. Gene Buckner and Ricky Black will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The Family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home.

Born on February 5, 1942, in Decatur, Arkansas, Billie Joe was the son of the late Burl Gordon Black, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Reed Black. Billie Joe dedicated 21 years of his life to the United States Air Force, where he served with honor as a Master Sergeant. His military career was marked by his unwavering dedication, leadership, and commitment to excellence. His contributions to the Air Force were a testament to his strength of character and patriotism.

Upon retiring from the Air Force, Billie Joe transitioned seamlessly into civilian life, serving his community and excelling in his new roles. He worked as a flight engineer for American Airlines, a role that reflected his technical skills and passion for aviation. He then took on a significant role as a Heavy Equipment Technician Trainer at Carlton Construction. He extended his impact at Albany Tech, working as a diesel instructor, where he imparted his knowledge and skills to others in his field.

Throughout his diverse career, Billie Joe remained deeply committed to his family. He was a devoted husband and a proud father. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Victoria “Vickie” Ann Black Stewart; and brothers, Gordon Black and Harold Black.

He is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis Ann Buckner Black of Hartsfield; children, Cindi Everett and husband Paul of Hartsfield, Billie J. Black, Jr. and wife Jennifer of Cordele, and Ricky Black and wife Karen of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren, Amber Everett, Eric Everett, Ashley Weathers, Alex Everett, Billie Black, III, Brigette Black, Christopher Rose, Jessica Maskery, Levi Strohauer, Richard Black, Christopher Black, William Stewart, Jr., and Lisa Sumner; several great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Billy, Mary, Alice, Wanda, Lilly, Patsy, Peggy, Harry, and Norma; and many special nieces and nephews.
