Charles Richard Byrd, Sr.

Charles Richard Byrd Sr. (veteran) MOULTRIE Charles Richard Byrd Sr., 77, of Moultrie, died Friday, May 31, 2013, at Colquitt Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 2, at Baker Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Sparks Cemetery. The Rev. Elbert Cox will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Andy Cashwell. Pallbearers will be the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard. Grandchildren and nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers. Mr. Byrd was born April 7, 1936, in Barney, Ga., son of the late Jack D. Byrd and Ruby Hiers Byrd. He was a member of Sparks Baptist Church. Mr. Byrd served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years; he retired in 1973 as a technical sergeant. He served in the Korean and Vietnam wars, and he worked many public service jobs. He was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal while serving in Spain. He was a life time member of the Disabled Veterans, DAV. An avid outdoorsman, he also was a member of the National Rifle Association and member of Little River Muzzle Loaders. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Joan Brice Bryd of Moultrie; two sons, Charles R. Byrd Jr. and wife Suk Hui of Moultrie and Greg Brice Byrd and wife Cindy of Winter Park, Fla.; a daughter, Vickie Parker Thompson and husband Randy of Moultrie; two brothers, Jack D. Byrd Jr. and Benny Byrd and wife Sue, all of Moultrie; a sister, Patsy Byrd Hobbs and husband Gene of Moultrie; three grandchildren, Chasta Leigh Lagle and husband Jimmy of Panama City, Fla., Joshua Byrd Parker and wife Alaina of Gulf Shores, Ala., and Jeffrey Lynn Byrd of Seoul, South Korea; great-grandchildren, Karli Parker, Kailin Parker, Breelyn Parker, Laigan Lagle and MaLeigh Lagle; sister-in-law, Joyce Gallaway Byrd of Lynn Haven, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Lee Byrd. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Saturday, June 1, at the funeral home.
