Our beloved Donis joined our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 2, 2019. She passed away after a brief illness at Colquitt Regional Medical Center.
Donis Virginia Cannon Hagin was born in Doerun, Georgia on December 28, 1926 to Reba Jones Cannon and Henry Cleveland Cannon. She lived her early years on a family farm and attended Okapilco School. She graduated from Moultrie High School in 1944. She married a handsome sailor war veteran, Herman Hagin Jr., whose family lived on an adjacent farm in Colquitt County. They married on her birthday, December 28 in 1946 and took a train to Houston, Texas to begin their married lives.
Donis worked her entire career for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator and later in an administrative role. Herman worked most of his career for Shell Oil. While they lived in Galena Park, Texas their only child, Kenneth was born in 1956. After retirement from Bell and Shell in 1985, the Hagins returned to Moultrie to enjoy family and friends. Even though they had spent many years as Texans, growing up in Colquitt County affected them in ways that became noticeable when they moved back. It didn't take long until much of their leisurely days were focused on enjoying the fresh vegetables and fruits of this area. Whatever the harvest, from peaches to peas, they enjoyed freezing, canning and preparing meals which became an every day pleasure.
Her Christian faith was an important aspect of Donis's life. She was a Christian from an early age and was faithful in studying the Bible and attending church. They became members of First Baptist Moultrie soon after returning. They quickly joined in with a group of seniors that invaded the Golden Corral every Sunday night.
The youngest in her family, Donis was the last surviving member of her generation in the Cannon family. She was preceded in death by her parents: Reba Jones Cannon and Henry Cleveland Cannon; all of her siblings and their spouses:
Sisters Bessie Lee Hancock and husband Leon
Lucille Young and husband Harvey
Blanche Anderson and husband Marvin
Marie Wells
Mary Jordan and husband Ulysses
and her one brother, Henry Clarence Cannon and wife Erline.
Her dearly loved husband known to family and friends as Jabo also went before her.
Donis was blessed with the ability to continue to live her life at home because of her wonderful caregivers: Emily Baron, Latavia Richardson, Juanita Wright and Melinda Edwards. We are grateful to these ladies, who have become extended family, for the past seven years of devotion and dedication in helping Donis to live a full, enjoyable life until she was 92 years old.
She is survived by her son Kenneth Eugene Hagin and wife, Karen.
Sisters-in-law Mary Faison, Vera Hagin, Patricia Preston and husband Richard Gerfen as well as one brother-in-law, Harry Carr and many nephews and nieces.
The service to celebrate her life will be held at Baker Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 11 at 11 AM. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at West View Cemetery.
