Ellis Lee Whittington, 88, of Omega, passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at his residence. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at 11:00am in the chapel of Baker Funeral Home with Rev. Jimmy Voyles officiating. Interment will follow at Baker/Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Whit Coarsey, Rick Powell, Daniel Greene, Charles Stern, Kim Turner, and Mark Turner. Born on March 29, 1929 in Worth Co., Georgia, he was the son of the late Gip Whittington and Alma Lee Hawkins Whittington. After high school, Mr. Whittington enlisted in the United States Army where he served for 20 years. During this time, he attended night classes and then enrolled full time at Georgia Institute of Technology where he graduated in 1957. He then moved to Tifton and started working for the Georgia Department of Transportation where he served as the Assistant District Civil Engineer, but farming was his true love. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Omega. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Algie Whittington, Irving Whittington, and Frank Whittington; and sisters, May Bell Pope, Elaine Chronister, Clara Willis, and Virginia Spink. He is survived by his wife, LaVerne Strickland Whittington of Omega; daughters, Kathy Whittington Coarsey(Carroll) of Enigma, Nancy Whittington Selix (Rusty) of Mill Valley, CA, and Vivian Whittington Stern (David) of Albany; grandchildren, Whit Coarsey (Veronica) of Enigma, Caroline Coarsey of Norcross, Rick Powell (Niki) of Tifton, Daniel Greene of Boulder, CO, Hannah Stern of Atlanta, and Charles Stern of Athens; great grandchildren, Austin Coarsey, Price Coarsey, both of Enigma; and brother, James Whittington (Patricia) of Crosland. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday, October 14, 2017 in the Chapel of Baker Funeral Home. Flowers are accepted or donations can be made in his memory to Hospice of Tiftarea 618 Central Ave, Tifton, Georgia 31794 or to a charity of your choice.
