Homer Alexander Lanier, Jr.

Homer A. Lanier, Jr. peacefully left his earthly home in Pavo, Georgia for Heaven at 10:00 am on Thursday June 15, 2017 at Archbold Hospital with loving members of his family surrounded him. He was active until his death. He drove a team of horses two weeks ago, and was still involved in the operation of Lanier Farm. He was 90 years old, born September 17, 1926 to Homer A. Lanier, Sr., and Ola Jay Lanier. Funeral services will be held on Saturday June 17, 2017 at 4pm at Pavo Baptist Church with Rev. Tim Vanlandingham and Rev. Robert McCoy officiating. Interment will follow at Pavo/Lebanon Church Cemetery. Pallbearers are Trey Lanier, Mackie Dekle, Carter McDonald, Sonny Murphy, Tim Jamison, Rick Barnes, Russ Barnes, and Brook Parrish. He was a lifetime resident of South Georgia. He was a strong Christian cowboy! He was a long-time member of Pavo Baptist Church and later returned to the fellowship of Autreyville Baptist Church where the Lanier family were pioneer members. He was a strong family man and loved his family dearly, he had a large extended family of chosen special friends. He drove a horse to Autreyville to meet the school bus to attend Colquitt County Schools with his cousins. He was a graduate of Moultrie High School. In the early 1940's he was instrumental in forming the Lanier Rodeo Team. This group performed trick riding events all over Georgia and Florida. They even produced a few rodeos in the little community of Ione which was home for him. His love for horses never faded. He and those trick riders could tell stories about their adventures that would have you laughing for hours. He was a farmer and a cattleman and loved the beautiful land that he called home. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Glenn Wyatt Lanier; son in law, Rusty Guy, as well as a nephew Johnny Westberry. He was also preceded in death by many Lanier uncles and aunts who treated he and his brother Glenn Like their own children. He lost a sister in law at a very young age, Melva Jean Glass Lanier. Survivors include his wife of 67 years Winnie McDonald Lanier; daughter Debbie Lanier Guy and Robert Dennis; son, Al Lanier and wife Dina; sister in law, Ann Lanier, all of Pavo; Grandchildren who knew him affectionately as OMIE, Shannon Pionessa and Jerry of Thomasville, Dr. Tracie Guy of Gainesville, FL, Trey Lanier of Pavo, Leigh Lawrence and Josh of Dothan, Alabama. He loved his three great grandchildren, twins, Sawyer and Guy Pionessa of Thomasville and Luke Lawrence of Dothan. He is also survived by many McDonald relatives including sister and brother in laws as well as nieces and nephews.
