Jeanette Jean' Wilkes McPhaul, 95, of Magnolia Manor Nursing Center in Americus, Ga., formerly of Moultrie, died Monday, June 4, 2012, at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus. Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Sunday, June 10, at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Addington, the Rev. John Brodess and the Rev. Joy Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot in Westview Cemetery with James D. Middlebrooks III, John Wilkes III, Albert B. Maxwell, William M. McIntosh, Reginald Comer and the Rev. Saunders Pinckard serving as pallbearers. A reception at the church will follow the service. A memorials service and reception will be held at 3 p.m., on Monday, June 11, at Magnolia Manor in Americus. Born Oct. 9, 1916, in Moultrie, she was the daughter of the late Georgia state senator and superior court judge, John Anderson Wilkes Sr., and the late Mattie Powell Wilkes, who were pioneer settlers of Moultrie. She a life-long member of First United Methodist Church of Moultrie and was enrolled in the cradle roll department when she was an infant. Her family said that she fondly remembered her days as a member of the Lena Tyson Sunday School Class. She was a former member and officer of the Moultrie Federated Guild and the Azalea Garden Club. As a young woman, she worked as a secretary for several Moultrie business firms and volunteered as a Pink Lady at Vereen Memorial Hospital. "She had a strong faith, a keen eye for fashion, and a quick wit. She will be deeply missed by many," her family said. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard L. McPhaul; and nine brothers and sisters. Survivors include daughters, Jan Middlebrooks of Marietta, Ga., and Nancy McPhaul of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; grandchildren, Elizabeth Woodard of Dothan, Ala., and James D. Middlebrooks III and wife Milinda of Milan, Ind.; great-grandchildren, Malisa Middlebrooks of Madison, Wis., and Patrick Golden of Dothan, Ala.; her nephew and his wife, John A. Wilkes III and Edna Wilkes of Norman Park; her caregivers at Magnolia Manor in Moultrie and Americus; and family friends, Sharon Lawson of Norman Park and Reginald and Mary Comer of Americus. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Moultrie or to Magnolia Manor or to a charity of choice.
