Jesse Andrew (J.A. Pope Jr.) Jesse Andrew Pope (J.A. Pope Jr.) passed away March 8th 2014 at his home at 3017 Ellenton Norman Park Road surrounded by his sons and their families. Mr. Pope is pre-deceased by his parents J. A. Pope Sr. And Sarah Meacy Weeks Pope, sister Myrtice Pope Clark, and granddaughter Celeste Pope. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Margaret Foster Pope of Norman Park, his sister Thelma Pope Stewart of Norman Park, sons Jesse H. Pope and wife Susan of Norman Park, Joe Pope and wife Laura of Tifton, Jim Pope and wife Robbie of Tifton, Jeffery Pope and wife Donna of Norman Park. Grandchildren: Jay L. Pope (Kristy), Jolie Pope McDaniel (Christopher), Jenna Noel Pope, Josh Pope (Lauren), Jordan Pope (Marcy), Jessica Pope, Lori Pope Jackson (Neal), Wendy Canady Spurlin (Anthony), Niki Pope Wade (Brooks), Joe Hicks (Carrie) and 13 Great Grandchildren. Born January 8, 1933 in Norman Park, Georgia, Mr. Pope spent most of his young life on the family farm working with his father until joining the army in 1951 with active service in the Korean War until 1953 with the 3rd Army 187th Artillery FOAB reaching the rank of Staff Seargant. Mr. Pope was involved in farming and self-employed as owner of Pope Welding and Construction. He joined the Colquitt Co. Sheriff's Department in 1981 serving 17 years and was severely wounded in the line of duty in 1986 in an escape attempt of a prisoner. He continued service and retired as an investigator in 1998. Mr. Pope loved being with his friends and family, was an avid fox hunter and Braves Fan, loved fishing in the family pond with the kids and grandkids, watching Nascar races and attending the races at Needmore Speedway. Pallbearers will be Jay Pope, Josh Pope, Jordan Pope, Neal Jackson, Brooks Wade, Christopher McDaniel, Anthony Spurlin, and Tyler Olivas. Honorary Pallbearers will be J.A. Norman and wife Bama, Larry Cone, Russell Nasworthy, Ray Nicholson, Hal Suber, and Kenny Bostick. Visitation will be at Baker's Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Monday, March 10, 2014. A lifetime member of Cool Springs Freewill Baptist Church, the funeral will be held at Cool Springs Freewill Baptist Church in Norman Park on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at 2:00 PM with interment at the Pope Family Plot in Cool Springs with Brother Jimmy Voyles and Brother Marlon Daniels officiating.
