Jewell Smithwick Bateman (PICTURE) CORDELE Jewell Smithwick Bateman, 100, of Cordele, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at Crisp Regional Nursing and Rehab. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 12, in Murphy Cemetery with the Rev. Stanley Norman officiating. Born Feb. 10, 1912, in Moultrie, she was the daughter of the late Richard Strickland and Carrie Tillman Strickland. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Carey Smithwick Sr.; sons, Lester Smithwick Jr. and Franklin Smithwick; daughter, Joan Griffin; sisters, Gladys Smithwick, Evie Baker, Lola Bell, Thedus Gardner and Gola Kelly; and brothers, Clayton Strickland, Howard Strickland and L. D. Strickland. Survivors include a son, Harry Smithwick and wife Janice of Cordele; a sister, Dottie Gardner of Moultrie; 19 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
