Lawton Virgil Matthews, 81, of Moultrie, passed away on Friday, August 23, 2024, at Pruitt Health Magnolia Manor.
A graveside services will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, August 25, 2024, at Westview Cemetery with Reverend Richard Wright officiating.
Mr. Matthews was born on February 9, 1943, in Moultrie, Georgia, to the late Dorsey R. Matthews and Elizabeth Taylor Matthews. He grew up on the Matthews Family Farm in Colquitt County. Mr. Matthews attended Moultrie Senior High School and played on the Packer football team with a group of players who were lifelong friends. He then went to the University of Georgia graduating in 1966. He was an avid Georgia Bulldog Fan. After college, he returned to farming, managing the family farm until retirement. Because of farming, he was a great supporter of the Farm Bureau. He was involved with the local Farm Bureau for 50 years, serving on the Board of Directors and a term as president. Lawton’s faith in Jesus Christ has been a sustaining factor throughout his life. He was a member of Tyson Methodist Church until its closing. He then became a member of Moultrie First Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Paula Matthews; and sister, Judith Matthews Bryan.
Mr. Matthews is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sandra Ferrone Matthews; son, Mark Lawton Matthews and wife Jennifer of Cartersville, Georgia; grandson, Knox Lawton Matthews of Cartersville, Georgia; brother, Hugh Dorsey Matthews and wife Nancy of Moultrie, Georgia; and sister, Melanie Matthews Scarborough of Covington, Georgia.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to a charity of your choice.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Baker Funeral Home.
