Wilton Laverne "Pete" Gunn

On Thursday, October 24, 2024, God, after blessing Wilton L. “Pete” Gunn with a wonderful and adventurous life, called Pete home to rest. Pete was born on April 7, 1941, in Crosland, Georgia, to Norman D. Gunn, Sr., and Dora May McDonald Gunn.

After living in Moultrie, the family settled into the Oakdale Community. Immediately after graduating from Moultrie High School in 1959, Pete set off to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force. He had a distinguished career serving in the command post and communications billets. During his first assignment, he met his wife, Charlotte, in Columbus, Mississippi. Together, they launched their adventures, which would take them to Georgia, Hawaii, California, Florida, South Carolina, Washington D.C., and Enid, Oklahoma. Pete had to go alone to Guam and Alaska. Pete enjoyed meeting people and was able to have friends throughout the country.

After retiring from the U.S. Air Force, Pete began his second career at Delta Air Lines in Atlanta. Starting out as a truck driver, he eventually worked his way to being a material planner. Pete enjoyed the travel benefits, which allowed him to tour the country and learn about the history and importance of several destinations.

Alaska became his favorite place to visit, so when Pete decided it was time to retire the second time, he loaded up and moved to Eagle River. There he found the job he enjoyed the most, driving a school bus. He enjoyed interacting with the kids and parents on his route. Many of those people still kept in touch with Pete. He also invited many friends to visit and was happy to tour them around the state.

Eventually, cold weather and other life events brought him back to Moultrie, where he enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and meeting new ones. He was a proud member of the Hardee’s Breakfast Club.

The common theme throughout his life was education and learning. He attended three years of college and many courses offered through the military. He always encouraged his family to look for positive lessons from situations. Above all, he stressed the importance of pursuing a deep connection to and relationship with God.

There will be a remembrance ceremony in Pete’s honor on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., at Baker Funeral Home. Visitation will start at 1:00 p.m. All of his friends and family are invited to attend. He will be interred with full military honors at North Mississippi Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Kilmichael, MS on Friday, November 1, 2024. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Due to the funeral services being held out of state, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the giver’s favorite charities.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Paul Gunn.

He is survived by his loving wife, Catherine Charlotte Gunn of Moultrie; son, Scott Gunn and his wife Joyce of Huntsville, AL; his grandsons, Ethan Lucas Gunn and Matthew Alexander Gunn; his sister, Gail Weaver; his brother Paul’s widow, Patsy Gunn; his brothers, Norman D. Gunn, Jr., and his wife Connie, Silas Gunn and Jan DeMott, Rick Gunn and his wife Melanie; his beloved dog, Maple; and countless other relatives, family, and friends.

Finally, we are all assured that Dobie and Okie were there to meet Pete at the other end of the Rainbow Bridge.
